چکیده

Optical regeneration, high-speed synchronisation, OTDM packet network, timing jitter, clock recovery Key Results: Results show serious limitations in the minimum level of jitter tolerable by high-speed regeneration. For 40Gbit/s OTDM (Optical Time Division Multiplexing) transmission the tolerable level of jitter to maintain error-free transmission, is 1.5ps for synchronous regeneration and 1ps for asynchronous regeneration. How does the work advance the state-of-the-art?: An analytical expression to evaluate the BER (Bit Error Rate) for 3R regeneration is obtained for the first time, as a function of input data signal and clock signal jitter statistical characteristics. The statistical model developed is applied to analyse different packet regeneration architectures and compare their performance. Motivation (Problems addressed): Accumulation of timing jitter due to fibre nonlinearities imposes a limit on the achievable bit rate distance product in high-speed OTDM packet transmission. Optical 3R regeneration (signal Re-shaping Re-timing and Re-amplifying) has been shown experimentally to allow to enhance the error-free transmission distance [1]. Different solutions have been proposed in literature to perform optical 3R regeneration for high-speed OTDM packet transmission. However the design of high-speed optical 3R regenerators requires analytical tools to assess and quantify the effect of timing jitter on the process of optical OTDM regeneration.

Design of Arrayed Waveguide Grating based Optical Switch for High Speed Optical Networks

This paper demonstrates the design of an Arrayed Waveguide Gratings (AWG) based optical switch. In the design both physical and network layer analysis is performed. The physical layer power and noise analysis is done to obtain Bit Error Rate (BER). This has been found that at the higher bit rates, BER is not affected with number of buffer modules. Network layer analysis is done to obtain perfor...

High-speed All- Optical Time Division Multiplexed Node

In future high-speed self-routing photonic networks based on all-optical time division multiplexing (OTDM) it is highly desirable to carry out packet switching, clock recovery and demultplexing in the optical domain in order to avoid the bottleneck due to the optoelectronics conversion. In this paper we propose a self-routing OTDM node structure composed of an all-optical router and demultiplex...

Modelling of Packet Loss in an Asynchronous Packet Switch using PEPA

Packet switches switch data packets from a given ingress port to an egress port determined by information in the packet header. Asynchronous packet switches (Figure 1) don’t assume synchronisation between arrivals of packets on different ingress ports, and don’t attempt to synchronise the forwarding of packets to the egress ports. This type of packet switch is being investigated for high-speed ...

Simulation of an all Optical Time Division Multiplexing Router Employing

Synchronisation is an important and critical issue in high-speed all optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) packet routing and transmission. In this paper we present a technique for separating the clock synchronization pulse from an incoming optical time division multiplexed data packet, based on all-optical switching devices with optical feedback. A 1X2 OTDM router composed of three Symmetri...

A Fluid-based Simulation Study: The Effect of Loss Synchronization on Sizing Buffers over 10Gbps High Speed Networks

Router buffer size has been playing an important role in packet based networks. In particular, it has been argued that high speed optical networks of the order of 10Gbps demand for large buffer size according to rule of thumb. Because of inherent limitations (i.e., execution time and memory overhead) of a packet based simulator for high speed optical networks, there are few simulation studies a...
